Brian Hanson, MED’84 has been an active member of The Explorers Club for 37 years.
In April of 2022, he completed his third and final year as a Director Emeritus.
Brian was first elected to the Board of Directors in 2000 and served on the Board for a total of 16 years. In 2021 he completed 11 years as Club Ombudsman. Brian is currently a member of The Legacy Society Committee and Management Committee.
He has previously served on the following Club committees: Flag and Honors, Membership, ECAD Dinner, ECAD Exotics, Teller, Youth Activities, Bylaws Revisions, Ethics & Governance, and Confidentiality & Transparency. He has chaired the Chapter Relations Committee, the Nominating Committee, and the Management Committee.
He was Vice President for Chapters from 2002 to 2007. Brian was awarded the Edward C. Sweeney Medal in 2003 for his service to the Club and the Citation of Merit in 1994 for his work in Chapter Relations.
He has participated on 20 Club flag expeditions, including Botswana, Belize, Tarawa Atoll, Saudi Arabia, Bhutan, Antarctica, Easter Island, the Solomon Islands, Raivavae, and the Marquesas. He has served as Chair of the Texas Chapter and is currently serving on that chapter’s Executive Committee.
Brian earned a B.S. in Chemical Engineering at the University of Texas at Austin, an M.S. in Management at U.S.C., and an M.B.A. at Texas A&M University at Kingsville. He enjoyed a 33-year career with Hoechst Celanese Corporation, completing his final three years as a Director at the Al Jubayl petrochemical facility in Saudi Arabia. Brian served five and a half years in the U.S. Air Force, attaining the rank of Regular Captain. He was awarded the Air Force Commendation Medal in 1967 and the Bronze Star for Meritorious Service in Viet Nam in 1968. Brian is a Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society.
