Branndon has led large and difficult expeditions to Alaska, Uganda, Kenya, Tanzania, Iran, Turkey, Ecuador, Peru, and more than 40 other states and countries. He competes in the world’s most difficult endurance events to keep in shape for his expeditions, including the world’s toughest canoe race, the world’s toughest one-day mountain bike race in Bhutan, and racing in triathlons and ultramarathons.
Nancy films and conducts tours in many of the world’s most exotic locations; some so remote the local natives have never before seen Western people. For her efforts as an explorer, Nancy was recently named as a Fellow in the esteemed Explorers Club for contributing to scientific knowledge in the field of geographical exploration. She produces, edits and films her own documentaries, each with a unique historical spin on culture and the marine ecosystem. Nancy’s credits include work for NBC, Universal Studios, and Discovery. She has written for a variety of dive journals and publications.
In 2007, Hartsell was inducted as a Member into The Explorers Club. Its membership includes: First to the North Pole; First to the South Pole; First to the Summit of Mt. Everest; Deepest to the bottom of the Oceans; and First to the Moon.
Helium is now a subject among his interests. He is organizing the World Sky Race, the historic first race of airships to circle our Planet Earth.
The frequent opening of the Passage due to melting sea ice will continue to alter trade routes, speed of ocean transit, industry and population growth above the Arctic Circle.
The team will follow the route of the first successful crossing of the Passage by Roald Amundsen, which he accomplished 1903-06.
Due to the ongoing pandemic our plans to kayak the entire 1900 miles of the infamous Northwest Passage has been postponed until 2022.
Bill Steele (FE ’79) is busily organizing the Proyecto Espeleologico Sistema Huautla (PESH) Explorers Club Flag expedition. The expedition send-off party in Austin on Saturday evening, March 28, and the next day begin the three day drive to southern Mexico. The expedition will run the month of April.
Joe Watson developed a water-buffalo milk for children program in Nepal and thus he is know there as “Buffalo Joe” or as the kids sometimes call him, “Uncle Buffalo.”
As well as photographer and explorer, Joe Watson is a Texas real estate developer, an off-shore sailor racing from the Texas Gulf to Palma de Mallorca, and Porto Cervo in the Med; a competitive aerobatic pilot, five-decade diver (Watsons are a dive family starting at age 10), and his most important claim, a devoted grandfather of two terrific boys; “let’s do it for the grandkids!”
